A motion goes on the table, you each take a side on a clock, and an AI judge writes a full ballot at the end: the decision, the reasoning that produced it, speaker points, and what each side should fix next round. Every public round uses Casual 1v1, a plain-English structure that works even if you have never debated before. Limited free access is available and the current allowance is shown before the round begins. If the queue is empty, an AI opponent is one tap away and is always labeled as AI.

2ArguFight Asynchronous rounds · AI judge panel · ELO
Challenge a person or an AI opponent and trade written arguments across multiple rounds, with a standard mode that gives each side a day per round and a speed mode measured in the hour. Three AI judges are drawn from a roster of scoring personalities such as the Empiricist, the Logician, and the Rhetorician, each scoring independently from 0 to 100, and the majority decides. Results move an ELO rating, and bracket tournaments seed off it.
Best for: competitive written debate with a rating to defend, when you would rather write than speak.
3SuperDebate Moderated live events · audience verdict
Structured video debates from one speaker a side up to five, with a moderator, synced speech timers, and a default format that runs about 28 minutes plus prep. Both sides get equal time to build a case, question each other directly, answer what was actually said, and close. Live audience voting runs alongside judge scoring, and events are attendable end to end whether or not you speak. SuperDebate also runs in-person clubs in a number of cities, which is unusual in this list.
Best for: a moderated event with a real audience, and for anyone who wants an offline club as well as an online room.
4Debatr Instant video · 30 seconds a side
The fastest format here. You are matched with a stranger on video, one of you gets 30 seconds, then the other gets 30 seconds, then 30 seconds of open crossfire, and the topic rotates. Spectators watch live and vote on who is winning, and you can cut a short clip of your best moment to share. Camera and microphone required.
Best for: quick sparring and clips, when a full round is more time than you want to give.
5Bantr Live audio and video · live polls
Debate rooms built around assigned pro and con positions, with two to four speakers on stage, stage management, and real-time polls that decide the outcome. The audience is part of the machine here: watching is free without an account, and listeners can request a seat and get assigned to whichever side needs a voice. The free tier caps room length, speaker count, and rooms per day; a paid Pro plan lifts those limits.
Best for: a panel-shaped debate with a crowd in the room, closer to live radio than to a tournament.

A nonpartisan nonprofit debate series carried on public radio, YouTube, and the major podcast apps, with hundreds of debates recorded since 2006. It is frequently listed alongside the platforms above, so it is worth being precise about what it is: the debaters are invited experts chosen by an editorial team, and there is no path for a listener to enter a round. Excellent to learn from, not somewhere you compete.
Best for: listening to expert debate on serious topics. Use one of the twelve above if you want to argue yourself.
How to choose
Match the platform to the job. If you want a real round, on your feet, against someone you have never met, that is live video: Debatable for random matchmaking with a written ballot, Debatr for a fast 30-second exchange, SuperDebate for a moderated event, Mixidea for a team round with a club, Ziggy for a scheduled tournament. If you want a rating that means something, Debatable and ArguFight both keep score across rounds. If you think better in writing, DebateArt and DebateIsland give structure to text and VersyTalks gives you a softer landing. Kialo is the odd one out and the best companion to all of them: map the issue first, then go argue it.
Two trade-offs worth knowing before you sign up anywhere. The first is liquidity. A matchmaking queue is only as fast as the number of people sitting in it, which is why Debatable keeps a Casual 1v1 AI opponent one tap away and never pretends it is a person. The second is who decides. An audience vote rewards the speaker the room already agrees with, a rated community vote rewards the better writer, and a judge working from a published rubric is trying to reward the better argument. Is there an Omegle for debate?
